We're taking the car ferry back to Terceira and Lajes AFB. Its been a year since the Saab was last there. This time, she'll be going into the Auto Hobby Shop to have some work done. Jeanette will do some Consulate work there and bounce over to the island of Graciosa for Consulate work as well. It's a 6 hour ferry ride. We leave at 5:45pm and get there about midnight. On board the ship, you get to see something that no one in the major cities gets to see - The Milky Way. When you're out on the ocean, miles from any source of land, you also don't get any light pollution. This let's you see far more stars, and far smaller stars, than you ever could near a big city. Unfortunately, its impossible to shoot it with a digital camera on a moving ship. But its neat to see.

The cast of NBC's Today Show is back from covering the Olympics in China. Today, they showed a clip of the Azores. Meredith Vieira's family roots are in the Azores. She visited the island of Faial for the first time, where her grandparents and great-grandparents were born. The entire Consulate watched it on AFN. You can watch it streamed to your desktop by clicking here. While the segment focused more on Meredith's roots than the islands themselves, there are some quick but great shots of Faial. |

Based on my "experience" installing Jeanette's flower garden sprinkler system, I decided to try and tackle the front yard in a similar manner. I applied some changes, such as burying the primary hose and using larger heads, for the front yard since it is a little bigger than her flower garden. Jeanette helped out with the burying of the hoses. The yard isn't huge so regular sprinkler heads would be overkill. Because of the driveway, I have a hose connection so its not permanently connected. The connection uses the quick-release fittings they like in Europe rather than the screw on connections the US uses. The heads run down the long sides of the yard and the spray pattern reaches the middle from each side.
